In 1753, Ixora coccinea was the first of the genus named by Linnaeus. Ixora is derived from the Sanskrit word for a Hindu deity while 'coccinea' means "scarlet-dyed" (Latin), referring to the color of its flowers. There are also varieties with yellow, orange and pink flowers.
