Common name: Copperleaf, Joseph's Coat, Wilke's Acalypha,

Origin: Fiji and of the South Pacific
Category: Shrub

The species is named in honour of Rear Admiral Charles Wilkes (1798-1877), an American Naval Officer who explored the South Seas during the mid-1800s.


How to grow
Light : Full to partial sun
Soil : Rich, moist and well-draining
Water : Regularly
Prune : Pinch off flower buds and new shoots for a more bushy appearance, prune to desired height and shape
Propagate : Stem cuttings

Features : 
It has beautiful foliage. It can be grown in a container or on the ground. It loves a warm, humid and bright environment.

Interesting note: Peregrina is a spanish word meaning "pilgrim" or "wanderer". Coincidentally this is also the name of a famous pearl "la Peregrina" (the wanderer) once worn by European royalties and Elizabeth Taylor.

Acalypha hispida - Red Hot Cat's Tail

"Chenille" is the French word for caterpillar.

Chinese name: 紅尾鐵莧, 紅毛莧、狗尾紅, 猫尾紅

Malay name: Pokok Bunga Ekor Kucing (Cat's tail), Buntut Kucing

Origin: Malesia

How to grow:
Grow under the full sun in humus rich and well-draining soil. Propagate by cuttings.

Bahasa Malaysia:
A. hispida boleh ditanam dalam pasu atau di atas tanah sebagai pokok pagaran.

  1. Pembiakan : 
    • gunakan keratan batang atau ranting yang telah matang - 10cm panjang
    • celup bahagian bawah keratan dengan hormon penggalak akar
    • tanam dalam polibeg, medium tanah- 2:1 tanah bakar dan tanah hitam
    • letakkan di tempat redup
    • tutup bahagian atas dengan beg plastik untuk mempercepatkan proses pencambahan
  2. Tanah 
    • tanah gembur yang air mudah mengalir keluar dan tidak bertakung
    • nisbah medium campuran 3:2:1 (tanah peroi : baja organik : tanah bakar)
  3. Cahaya
    • matahari yang banyak tetapi tidak terlalu terik menggalakkan pembungaan
  4. Air yang mencukupi tetapi tidak terlalu banyak
  5. Baja 2 minggu sekali
  6. Cantas hujung batang dan ranting untuk menggalakkan pertumbuhan baru dan bunga yang banyak
