Ixora coccinea - Scarlet



Scientific name: Ixora coccinea

Common name: Flame of Woods, Jungle Flame, Jungle Geranium, West Indian Jasmine
Malay name: bunga siantan, pokok pecah periuk, Jejarum/jarum-jarum

Family: Rubiaceae (coffee family)
Origin: India

Category: Evergreen, ever-flowering woody shrubs.

In 1753, Ixora coccinea was the first of the genus named by Linnaeus. Ixora is derived from the Sanskrit word for a Hindu deity while 'coccinea' means "scarlet-dyed" (Latin), referring to the color of its flowers. There are also varieties with yellow, orange and pink flowers.
